![]() The Puerto Rico Trench is located at a boundary between two plates that pass each other along a transform boundary with only a small component of subduction. The Puerto Rico trench is at a complex transition from the subduction boundary to the south and the transform boundary to the west. A transform boundary is a fault or a series of parallel faults (fault zone) along which plates slide past each other via strikeslip. Our structural interpretation of the transform boundary geometry shows that the ridge and platform margin segments were each subjected to separate thermal influences from two different migrating spreading centres. Comparing Different Kinds of Plate Boundaries. If the two plates spread apart and move in opposite directions, then it is called a divergent boundary, and if two plates cross each other horizontally, it is called a transform plate boundary. Transform Boundaries When two plates slide past each other, they form a transform boundary. ![]() The San Andreas Fault, a transform boundary, runs south from the junction, separating the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. For example, if two tectonic plates come together and form a collision zone, they are called convergent plate boundaries. The EPG fault system makes up a transform boundary that separates the GonĂ¢ve microplate the fragment of the North American Plate upon which Haiti is situated from the Caribbean Plate. Running west from the triple junction is the Mendocino Fault, the transform boundary between the Gorda Plate and the Pacific Plate. The transform boundary, shown from point x to point y, connects the ridge zones and creates a localized spot where plate segments slide past each other horizontally. ![]() Friction and pressure are built up as the. ![]() This is a plate boundary in which two plates slide past one another. The Gagua Ridge thus represents failed subduction along a former fracture zone or transform boundary between two oceanic basins. Transform Plate Boundaries: Transverse Faults. Some transform faults connect continental parts of plates. The mode of failure along that transform boundary is unknown, but we can learn from similar known or recent geodynamic contexts. An example of a transform boundary is between the North American plate and Pacific plate. ![]()
